Far out on the right
Comment is free: Far out on the right
Politics in Hungary has taken a nasty turn with the creation of a rightwing militia. Istvan Csurka is perhaps the most outlandish man in Hungary, or at least in Hungarian politics. As the leader of the far, far, far right MIEP party, he is so anti-semitic, anti-gay, anti-roma, anti-capitalism, anti-American, anti-Russian, anti-anything western, anything Eastern, that the only word for him is neo-nazi, which, by the way, does not insult him.

Switzerland: Europe’s heart of darkness? - Independent Online Edition > Europe
Switzerland is known as a haven of peace and neutrality. But today it is home to a new extremism that has alarmed the United Nations. Proposals for draconian new laws that target the country’s immigrants have been condemned as unjust and racist. A poster campaign, the work of its leading political party, is decried as xenophobic. Has Switzerland become Europe’s heart of darkness?

Lithuania asks to quiz ex-Yad Vashem head over WWII killings - Haaretz - Israel News
Lithuania’s chief prosecutor is mulling whether to order a probe against the former director of Yad Vashem Yitzhak Arad into allegations he was involved in the killing of Lithuanians as a partisan fighter during World War Two. In a letter to the Justice Ministry, Lithuanian authorities asked to question the Lithuanian-born historian and retired Israel Defense Forces brigadier general on murder accusations raised by a local magazine article based on quotes from his autobiography and testimony he gave as a witness in trials of Nazi criminals. (…) The Lithuanian Holocaust is unique in that it was largely carried out by locals, especially members of the Order Police, who began butchering Jews the moment the Soviets left in 1941, even before the German army arrived. Only a few thousand of Lithuania’s 220,000 Jews survived the Holocaust. After the German army conquered Lithuania in 1941, the 15-year-old Arad fled his hometown ghetto and joined a unit of Soviet partisans until the Red Army took over the region. After the war he boarded an illegal immigrant ship to Israel, joined the Palmach [a pre-state elite strike force], and later served as an officer in the IDF, retiring in 1972 as head of the Education Corps. In civilian life Arad became a scholar and lecturer on Jewish history, specializing in the Holocaust. He was director of Yad Vashem from 1972 to 1993.

Dzeno Association .- Czech President opens “A Vanished World”
On Wednesday, 5 September 2007, Czech President Václav Klaus will open an exhibit entitled “A Vanished World” at the National Gallery’s Veletržní palác in Prague. VPORH president Čeněk Růžička says: “Today the history of the Roma and Sinti is still either unknown or grossly misrepresented. Our people are subjected to stigmatization, which means the rest of the population and its governing bodies determine what is thought of the Roma and Sinti. This exhibition, however, is unique in that it shows how we view ourselves.” The exhibit was created by the Committee for the Redress of the Romani Holocaust (VPORH) in collaboration with the National Gallery in Prague, the Czech Ministry of Culture, the Czech German Fund for the Future, the City of Prague and other partners.
Austria to charge 4 soldiers for Nazi salutes

Four Austrian soldiers face criminal charges for exchanging Hitler salutes in two videos that appeared on the Internet, Defence Minister Norbert Darabos said on Thursday. Any display of Nazi propaganda or symbols is a crime in Austria, which took decades to acknowledge it was more a willing party than a victim of Nazi Germany’s Third Reich. In the army barracks incident captured by mobile-phone camera and posted on the video-sharing Web site YouTube, a soldier goose-steps past and stretches out his right arm in a Hitler salute. Another shouts, “Heil Hitler!”
