The politics of fear return to Italy
The politics of fear return to Italy - Times Online
Immigrants are under attack from the resurgent Right - and even from vigilante mobs Italy: Italian Carabinieri raid a Romanian Gypsy camp in a Roman suburb. Is Italy succumbing to a wave of racism and xenophobia under its new centre-right Government? To Senada Salkanovic it looks that way: as she cuddles her daughter Brenda, 7, on the step of her shack at a Gypsy camp on Via Casilina, on the eastern outskirts of Rome, she wonders where she and her six children will go when the bulldozers arrive. The rubbish-strewn camp, consisting of wood and corrugated-iron cabins and dilapidated caravans, sits next to a disused airfield and is due for demolition as part of a new crackdown on illegal immigration and crime. Already nearly 40 huts have been dismantled, and 150 of the camp’s 800 inhabitants have left. “Where are we supposed to go?” asks Senada, who came to Italy from the former Yugoslavia 20 years ago. Her makeshift home, equipped with cupboards, a sink and a stove, is neat and well kept, in contrast to the dusty squalor outside. “They say we are all thieves, but I work as a cleaner.”

Latvian nationalist groups have issued a joint statement stating that if a gay Pride event occurs this weekend in the capital, Riga, violent protests may ensue. The event is scheduled for Saturday at the 11th November Embankment, where a key battle for Latvian independence was fought. “It is completely unacceptable to us as nationalist Latvians that on May 31 of this year, one of the central symbols of Latvian statehood and national self-understanding, the 11th November Shoreline, will be used by minorities of sexual inclinations to propagate their absolutely unhealthy views and amoral way of life,” the nationalists’ statement said. Resistance to Pride has also come from Riga’s deputy mayor, Andris Argalis, who called it “propaganda of perversion.”

A court in St. Petersburg handed down suspended sentences to six anti-fascists after finding them guilty of attacking a far-right rally two years ago, according to a May 27, 2008 report by the web site Jewish.ru. According to the verdict, in September 2006, anti-fascist activist Oleg Smirnov gathered a group of around 29 youths to attack a rally by the Movement Against Illegal Immigration (DPNI), which has in recent years emerged as Russia’s leading far-right movement. The anti-fascists attacked the rally, not causing any serious injuries on the nationalists’ side, and then fled as police approached. They were detained soon afterwards.

Hate 2.0: Hate groups, terrorists tap Web 2.0 to spread messages
May 28, 2008 (Computerworld) While consumers and marketers have found that Web 2.0 technologies are a good way to forge closer ties and to virally spread content across the Internet, hate groups and terrorists are now increasingly turning to blogs, video sites and social networks with more sinister goals. Buoyed mainly by Web 2.0 technologies, online hate activities have jumped 30% in the past year, according to a report released last week by the Simon Wiesenthal Center, an international Jewish human rights organization. The report counted some 8,000 Web sites and numerous online posts promoting hate and terrorist activity.

The British National Party sought yesterday to present the killing of one of its activists by a Muslim elder as an act of white martyrdom. On the steps of Stafford Crown Court, Michael Coleman, a BNP councillor and organiser of the party’s Stoke-on-Trent branch, said: “We advise anybody who gets angry: get involved with the BNP.” He was speaking at the end of the trial into the killing of Keith Brown, 52, a former boxer and friend of the BNP leader Nick Griffin, who collapsed and died after being knifed in the back by his next-door neighbour Habib Khan. Mr Griffin attended his funeral.
Why Is Anti-Immigrant Violence Rising in Italy?
Why Is Anti-Immigrant Violence Rising in Italy? | Newsweek International | Newsweek.com
Italy’s Unwanted. With anti-immigrant violence rising, Amnesty International condemns Rome’s new ‘climate of discrimination.’ The Pigneto neighborhood is one of the most culturally diverse in Rome. City residents consider it bohemian and flock to its ethnic restaurants and quaint stores. But last weekend the trendiness turned to ugliness when a group of around 20 balaclava-clad men, some wearing bandannas with swastikas, demolished shops and beat up non-Italian shopkeepers—mostly Chinese, Indian and Bangladeshi—with lead pipes and baseball bats. CCTV footage captured much of the violence, and residents reported that the gangs chanted “Get out, bastard foreigners.” Xenophobia is hardly new to Europe. But blatant hostility toward immigrants has taken a nastier turn in Italy since Silvio Berlusconi’s rightist government took power last month. Amnesty International, in a report released Wednesday, warns that Italy’s new “climate of discrimination” is a dangerous trend, encouraged by the country’s ruling political parties. “We are facing a wave of racism affecting all immigrants in Italy, including those who are documented,” Daniela Carboni of Amnesty International’s Italian division told a press conference after the report was released. “The erosion of everyone’s rights threatens to turn Italy into a dangerous country, currently for Roma [sometimes called gypsies] and Romanians and in the future potentially for all of us.”

Another Neo-Nazi Attack on Belarusian Opposition?
Union of Councils for Soviet Jews: Another Neo-Nazi Attack on Belarusian Opposition?
Belarusian opposition members have for years accused the government of tolerating or even collaborating with neo-Nazis, who regularly attack them. A May 22, 2008 report on the opposition web site Khartiya 97 may be the latest such incident. Boris Khamayda, the editor of an opposition newspaper in Vitebsk, recently received written threats from members of the neo-Nazi group Russian National Unity (RNU). The letter made specific reference to his opposition activities.
Nazis Under the Wing of Operation Condor
Nazis Under the Wing of Operation Condor
The ties of the CIA with former Gestapo officials and puppet governments in Latin America working to liquidate progressive movements during the 1960s-80´s have been proven. The forces that participated in Operation Condor —many of them former Nazi officers— were advised by US intelligence operatives. Despite 40 years having passed since that brutal torrent of kidnappings and assassinations, many people continue to decry such incidents and continue looking for their “disappeared” relatives. Writer Juan Gelman participated in the “Rally in Silence” this month. For the last 13 years, this has been held in the center of Montevideo, Uruguay, demanding truth and justice for what occurred during the 1973-1985 dictatorship. Gelman, who is among those who spent years investigating that period, discovered the whereabouts of his granddaughter Macarena in 2000. After several attempts at negotiation, in 2005 he found that the family of an Uruguayan police officer had raised the child.
How Nazi battleship was destroyed
How Nazi battleship was destroyed | From the Guardian | The Guardian
The Admiralty last night told the story of the destruction of the Bismarck, Germany’s 35,000-ton battleship, after a pursuit of more than 1,750 miles. After the loss of H.M.S. Hood on Saturday very strong forces were sent out to hunt the Bismarck. H.M.S. Rodney and H.M.S. Ramillies and the aircraft-carriers Ark Royal and Victorious were among notable ships in the pursuit. Bismarck came very near to making port. She was about 400 miles due west of Brest when she was brought to bay early yesterday morning, having then been hit by torpedoes from aircraft and destroyers. Our heavy ships were in action in the final phase, but it was the cruiser Dorsetshire which dealt the final blows-with torpedoes-at eleven o’clock yesterday morning. In the first action on Saturday the Bismarck was accompanied by the 10,000-ton cruiser Prince Eugen. “Measures are being taken in respect of her,” Mr. Churchill told the House of Commons yesterday. Apart from the Hood, only one British ship was damaged, H.M.S. Prince of Wales, which was slightly damaged on Saturday but was still able to engage the Bismarck again.

Two men attacked a black lawyer who works for the Kaliningrad regional legislature, according to a May 21, 2008 article in the national daily Komsomolskaya Pravda. Aleksandr Burger-Gasanov was attacked on the evening of May 9 (Victory Day) near his home. The victim noticed two men approaching him, but the attack happened too fast for him to react. He lost two liters of blood as a result of the ferocity of the attack, which was accompanied by racist abuse, including the “N word” which has migrated from English to the lexicon of the Russian far-right.
