Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has called on Max Mosley to resign, despite the motorsport boss winning a vote of confidence after a sex scandal. Mosley won the endorsement of members of governing body the FIA, of which he is president, on Tuesday. But Montezemolo told news agency Ansa: “He should realise that sometimes it is necessary to say to yourself I have to leave for reasons of credibility.” He is the first Formula One team figure to urge Mosley to quit since the vote. Di Montezemolo’s remarks carry added weight because Ferrari are powerful within F1 and have traditionally had a close relationship with the FIA in general and Mosley in particular. They will increase the pressure on Mosley to resign to avoid risking damaging F1 and the FIA. (…) On Tuesday Mosley won 103 of 169 votes in a process he called after the News of the World reported that he had taken part in a “Nazi-style orgy” with prostitutes. Mosley, the son of former British fascist leader Sir Oswald Mosley, accepts he visited the prostitutes but denies there were Nazi overtones. He has launched a legal action against the newspaper alleging defamation and invasion of privacy.

The Italian team, the current world champions, have long been closely aligned with Mosley and Bernie Ecclestone, the controller of formula one’s commercial rights. They significantly failed to join other major teams – including Mercedes-Benz, Honda, Toyota and BMW – who were quick to condemn Mosley’s refusal to step down after the revelations of his involvement in a sadomasochistic orgy, published in the News of the World nine weeks ago; Max Mosley wins vote to remain president but will he really be able to lead a fragmented FIA? Mosley darf also bis zum Ende seiner Amtszeit im Oktober 2009 Fia-Präsident bleiben. Doch seit Publikwerden seiner privaten Sex-Orgie mit fünf Prostituierten samt Nazi-Rollenspielen Ende März ist das Image des einstigen Saubermanns irreparabel ramponiert. Und das könnte der Formel 1 nachhaltig Schaden zufügen – auch finanziell. “Ich hoffe, dass es (das Abstimmungsergebnis, d.Red.) die Sponsoren und die Hersteller nicht destabilisiert hat”, unkte Bernie Ecclestone, der Chefpromoter der Formel 1, vor dem Rennen am Wochenende in Kanada. Es werde schwierig für Mosley, als Präsident weiter zu agieren, “wenn die Leute, die nicht mehr mit ihm verhandeln wollen, bei ihrer Position bleiben”. Mosley selbst hatte ja argumentiert, er sei er der Einzige, der die bevorstehenden Verhandlungen mit den Formel-1-Rechtehaltern CVC und über ein neues Concorde Agreement mit den Teams und Herstellern für die Fia angemessen führen könne. Die pikante Frage ist, wie glaubwürdig ein Verbandschef noch repräsentieren kann, der bei einem angeblich 2500 Pfund (rund 3100 Euro) teuren, mehrstündigen Sado-Maso-Vergnügen gefilmt wurde. “Nachdem er sich sein Leben lang das Rampenlicht mit gekrönten Häuptern und Berühmtheiten geteilt hat und willkommener Gast an den glamourösesten Orten der Welt war, wird Mr Mosley seine letzten Monate im Amt als Paria verbringen”, schreibt süffisant die Londoner “Times”.
