FURIOUS scenes greeted the far-right BNP’s European election victory after a night of drama at Manchester town hall. Party leader Nick Griffin – who has a conviction for publishing material likely to incite racial hatred – will now represent the north west of England, including Greater Manchester, in Brussels. Newly-elected Euro-MPs from all the mainstream parties walked off the stage in protest as Griffin began his victory speech. Sir Robert Atkins, the Conservatives’ top candidate, described the BNP as an ‘aberration’. Tony Lloyd, MP for Manchester Central, described the result as a ‘moment of shame’ for the region. The BNP won the last of eight seats in the north west by around 5,000 votes, ahead of the Greens.

Former chairman of the Neo-Nazi National Front group and current member of the fascist political party the BNP, Andrew Brons, has been elected as a member of the European Parliament for Yorkshire and the Humber. Brons won the seat with 120,139 votes (10%). In 1982, Brons led a National Front march through Northfield on which marchers chanted: “We’ve got to get rid of the blacks”. Brons is documented as saying to PC John Raj: “Inferior beings like yourself probably do not understand the principle of free speech”. Brons started his political career in the National Socialist Movement, a group that that was deliberately founded on Hitler’s birthday. It is BNP policy that members of ethnic minorities are banned from meetings and not are not allowed to join the political party — but are happy to accept their votes. The far right party’s leader Nick Griffin picked up a seat in the North West region in the early hours of this morning, after candidate Andrew Brons won in Yorkshire and the Humber.
