Trotz eines Nichtangriffspaktes und ohne Kriegserklärung überschritten 153 Divisionen mit 600.000 motorisierten Fahrzeugen, mehr als 3500 Panzern, fast 7200 Geschützen und rund 2700 Flugzeugen, insgesamt drei Millionen Soldaten die Grenze zur Sowjetunion. Es sollte ein Blitzkrieg werden, für den Hitler drei Monate anberaumt hatte. Doch hatten er und seine Militärs die Widerstandskraft der gegnerischen Armee und die Weite des Raums vollkommen unterschätzt, wie seinerzeit auch Napoleon, der ebenfalls an einem 22. Juni, am 22. Juni 1812, Russland angegriffen und dessen Armee ebenfalls fast vollkommen aufgerieben worden war.
