Pacifica Forum Speaker Celebrates National Socialism

The speaker blamed “Jewish lies” for the Iraq War, praised the swastika as a symbol of white people, showed a neo-Nazi propaganda video, and led several audience members in an enthusiastic Nazi salute. No, this wasn’t an assembly of America’s largest neo-Nazi organization, the National Socialist Movement (NSM). Rather, it was the weekly gathering of the Pacifica Forum, a formerly left-wing discussion group that has met for years at the University of Oregon. Although the forum has been hosting prominent Holocaust deniers and far-right extremists for more than two years, it ratcheted up the vitriol during its Dec. 11 meeting. Titled  „The National Socialist Movement: An Inside View of America’s Far Right,” the event basically amounted to a recruitment pitch for National Socialism, complete with sieg-heiling. The event provoked an outcry from community members. “Friday night was really wretched,” said Michael Williams, who has monitored Pacifica Forum for six years. “It was a lot like attending a Nazi rally.”

First Amendment doesn’t protect dangerous threats

It has been exactly 20 years since a pipe bomb sent to federal Judge Robert Vance’s Alabama home killed him and injured his wife. It has been more than 30 years since a hired killer gunned down federal Judge John H. Wood Jr. in his San Antonio driveway. It has been 10 days since a New Jersey jury deadlocked on whether a radio shock jock and blogger should be convicted for saying three federal appeals court judges in Chicago deserve to be killed. You might think that getting a conviction on that last one would be simple. But because of the First Amendment, it’s not. Though the First Amendment says „Congress shall make no law“ suppressing free speech, the Supreme Court has said in a series of rulings that there are some types of speech that can be punished because they just aren’t worth the trouble they cause. For instance, you probably couldn’t cry „First Amendment“ after you falsely yelled „fire“ in a crowded theater and caused a panic, Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes famously wrote in 1919. But words have to be pretty extreme and obnoxious to fall outside free-speech protections. What’s said must amount to „fighting words“ or incite „imminent lawless action“ or convey „true threats.“ But the outer boundaries seem to shift with the times. In 1942, you couldn’t call someone „damned racketeer“ and „damned Fascist“ on a public street because, the Supreme Court said, that was likely to provoke retaliation and a breach of the peace. But in 1969, the court said it wasn’t punishable for a Ku Klux Klan leader, at a rally with burning cross, to say if federal officials continued „to suppress the white, Caucasian race, it’s possible that there might have to be some revengeance taken.“ So where do shock jock/blogger Hal Turner’s words fall? Turner spews hate that his lawyers describe as political hyperbole, according to accounts of his trial. After Judges Richard Posner, Frank Easterbrook and William Bauer ruled that a lower court properly dismissed a challenge to handgun bans in Chicago and Oak Park, Turner wrote online, „These judges must die. Their blood will replenish the tree of liberty.“

He was acquitted of threatening the Citibank employee with the intent to extort, threatening Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Leonard Pitts and threatening a New Jersey mayor.

HITLER KEPT CHRIST OUT OF CHRISTMAS

Jesus was a Jew and Christianity was an oriental religion, so Hitler’s followers reinvented Yuletide as a pagan festival – and cast the Führer as the Messiah. A Yuletide fir tree decorated with sparkling swastikas, apple- cheeked children in uniform eager to bake SS insignia-shaped cakes for the whole family, and festive Germanic candlesticks hand-crafted in a concentration camp – such were the dubious delights of Christmas under Nazi rule. Sixty-five years after Germans celebrated the last Christmas of the Third Reich, a new exhibition at Cologne’s National Socialism Documentation Centre offers, for the first time, an insight into the elaborate propaganda methods devised by the Nazis in their campaign to take the Christ out of Christmas. The exhibition contains selected items from a vast private collection of Nazi Christmas memorabilia, including swastika and Nazi SS tree decorations, Aryan department store catalogues featuring presents for boys – toy Nazi tanks, fighter planes and machine guns – and music for carols that have been stripped of their Christian content.

Drugs, weapons, explosives, Nazi gear: Antioch suspect found unfit for trial

Police found weapons, explosives, Nazi paraphernalia and drugs when they raided an Antioch man’s home in September, but a judge on Tuesday ordered him transferred to a state mental facility because he is unfit for trial. Burl Thomas, 56, of the 25100 block of West Linden Lane, was brought into Lake County Court in a wheelchair and appeared confused when asked questions by Circuit Judge Fred Foreman or his attorney. (…) Thomas has been charged with unlawful use of a weapon, armed violence, possession of marijuana and cocaine with intent to deliver and having drug gear. „He’s a survivalist,“ Di Natale said. „He thinks there is a conspiracy to take over the country, and he thinks he is (in court) because he knows about it.“

Far Right Death Threats

With the convictions of nazi duo shepperd and whittle and the recent arrests of other nazis over web content, the legal implications are going to cause problems for the far right. The arrest last week of Michael Heaton, or ‘Wigan Mike’ as he is better known, for “soliciting murder and using threatening, abusive or insulting words likely to stir up racial hatred” has unpleasant implications for far right internet users. The charges relate to the Aryan Strike Force (ASF) website. Heaton has a long history of Nazi activities and has also been involved with the English Defence League (EDL). His co-defendant Trevor Hannington was accused of “possessing information likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism and disseminating a terrorist publication.” He was remanded until the new year and faces a dismal Christmas dinner. Heaton was arrested and then bailed which sparked suspicion on the VNN forum. Joey Owens initially expressed surprise that Heaton was bailed whilst Hannington was remanded but this has apparently been ‘explained’ to the moderator although there has been little posted since to substantiate the claim. Another poster worried that “If they can get Mike for what he has said on the net then they can get all or the majority of us I would wager.” Following the arrests Liam Pinkam, posting as Pino88 on VNN, wrote: “the BFF will be releasing a statement about it either today or tomorrow” which clearly implies an intimate connection between ASF and British Freedom Fighters. There has been no statement so far. Pinkham was arrested with Heaton earlier this year following an incident at the BNP rally in Blackpool.

ADL: Neo-Nazis use Deceptive Music Downloads to Attract Young People to White Supremacy

In an effort to lure young people into the white supremacist movement, neo-Nazis are using deceptive new tactics to appeal directly to high school and college students through advertisements in their school newspapers, according to the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), which actively monitors neo-Nazi and white supremacist groups. One scheme hatched by neo-Nazi Kevin McGuire of Bozeman, Montana involves placing advertisements in school newspapers offering “free music downloads.” As a result of the scheme, last month unsuspecting students at high schools in San Francisco and Carmel, Indiana were apparently tricked into running ads promoting the racist “Victory Forever” site operated by McGuire. In an apparent attempt to be misleading, the Victory Forever site initially displayed a page of music by independent artists, including at least one African-American artist. However, between the time when the ads were purchased and when they actually ran, the site was changed to its present, explicitly white supremacist form. “While the hatemongers have used stealth tactics before, now they are taking it to the next level by attempting to trick unsuspecting students into logging on to sites that appear harmless, but in reality are promoting music with a white supremacist message,” said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director. Recruiting “White Youth” McGuire, 27, has longstanding ties to the neo-Nazi National Alliance (NA) and has been active in the white supremacist movement for years. According to his site, the purpose of the “Victory Forever” project is to disseminate “white resistance” music as widely as possible and to “recruit vast minions of White youth to become soldiers in the war for White racial survival.” McGuire also maintains a related Web site called “Fetch the Rope” – an apparent reference to lynching – that makes available racist CDs, swastika stickers and t-shirts for purchase. The Fetch the Rope store advertises bulk orders of $10 for 25 CDs that are, according to McGuire, “cheap enough to hand out to the neighborhood kids.”

Pope says visit to Holocaust memorial ‘upsetting’

Pope Benedict XVI on Monday described a visit to Israel’s Holocaust memorial as a disturbing encounter with hatred, days after his decision to move the controversial World War II-era pope closer to sainthood angered Jewish groups. The German-born Benedict signed a decree Saturday on the virtues of Pope Pius XII, who has been criticized for not doing enough to stop the Holocaust. The decree means that Pius can be beatified – the first major step toward possible sainthood – once a miracle attributed to his intercession has been recognized. The decision sparked further outrage among Jewish groups still incensed over his rehabilitation earlier this year of a Holocaust-denying bishop, Richard Williamson. Nevertheless, a planned visit by Benedict to Rome’s main synagogue, scheduled for Jan. 17, is still on, said Ester Mieli, spokeswoman for Rome chief Rabbi Riccardo Di Segni. (…) „The visit to the Yad Vashem has meant an upsetting encounter with the cruelty of human fault, with the hatred of a blind ideology that, with no justification, sent millions of people to their deaths,“ he said. Yad Vashem is „first of all a commemorative monument against hatred, a heartfelt call to purification and forgiveness, to love,“ he said. Benedict’s speech during his Yad Vashem visit drew criticism in Israel, with some faulting the pope for failing to apologize for what they see as Catholic indifference during the Nazi genocide. Others noted that he failed to specifically mention the words „murder“ or „Nazis.

Theft of Nazi sign was orchestrated outside of Poland, officials say

Investigators criticize Auschwitz security system. A foreigner outside of Poland commissioned the theft of the infamous Auschwitz sign “Arbeit Macht Frei’’ (“Work Sets You Free’’) and detectives may expand their investigation beyond the country’s borders, officials said. In a bid to learn more about the escapade, the investigators held a reenactment yesterday of the theft by the three men who confessed to taking the sign from the former Nazi death camp at Auschwitz. Based on the evidence gathered since the theft Friday, the crime was commissioned by a “person living outside Poland’’ and police were seeking help from Interpol and others as they investigate, said Artur Wrona, the chief prosecutor in Krakow. Polish media have reported, without citing any sources, that someone in Sweden could be under suspicion, but Wrona did not confirm or deny the claims. In Stockholm, a Swedish police official said they have not been contacted about any links.

Demjanjuk trial hears of Nazi death camp horrors

A survivor of the Nazi death camp at which John Demjanjuk is accused of helping to kill 27,900 Jews recalled in court on Tuesday losing his wife after a three-day train journey to the extermination center. Demjanjuk, lying on a hospital bed, said nothing as Jules Schelvis, 88, described for the trial in Munich his arrival at the Sobibor death camp in Poland, where German state prosecutors accuse the 89-year-old defendant of assisting in killings. (…) Prosecutors say at least 250,000 Jews were killed at Sobibor. They accuse Demjanjuk, who was top of the Simon Wiesenthal Center’s list of most-wanted war criminals, of knowingly herding thousands of Jews to their deaths at the camp. Schelvis, whose wife was gassed, said he joined a group of 80 other young men after arriving at Sobibor and that they were sent to work at another camp, where those who found the labor too arduous were hanged.

Polish police recover Auschwitz gate sign, damaged

The three pieces of the infamous sign proclaiming „Arbeit Macht Frei“ („Work Sets You Free)“ will be welded together and restored to the main gate at the former Auschwitz death camp after an improved security system is put in place to guard against another theft. Officials at the Auschwitz memorial museum said Monday the new system would be aimed at better protecting not just the recovered sign but many other objects testifying to Nazi crimes — from two tons of human hair to a trove of written documents to the ruins of gas chambers now sinking into the earth. „The location of the sign is its only authentic one, above the gate of the former Auschwitz I camp,“ museum director Piotr Cywinski said. „The sign will return there as soon as possible, after ensuring the protection of its site against damage and burglary.“

Doch Neonazis versuchen dort seit einigen Wochen, Migranten und alternative Projekte mit Propaganda, dem Einschlagen von Scheiben und sogar Morddrohungen einzuschüchtern. Alleged White Supremacist Gets Three Years For Lying To Obtain Passport In L.A.

An alleged white supremacist practiced his anti-minority skills mostly in Nevada, but it was a little trip to one of the most diverse cities in the world that got him in hot water with federal authorities. Ross Hack, 38, drove to Los Angeles in the summer of 1998 to get a passport, and he lied on the application. On Wednesday, he was sentenced to three years in federal prison for the crime. Investigators, however, seem to think there’s more to Hack than just telling lies to obtain a little blue booklet. The strange caper started in 1998 with the Forth of July murders of Daniel Shersty and Linn „Spit“ Newborn, leaders of an anti-skin-skin head organization. An investigation led to Hack’s residence, where authorities with a search warrant took Hack’s passport, weapons and racist propaganda, according to a U.S. Department of Justice statement.
