German Schulz wins European Parliament presidency

Martin Schulz beat off the challenge of his two British rivals to win the presidency of the European Parliament today – and in his acceptance speech pledged to fight the “re-nationalisation of policy making” which, he warned, could lead to the ultimate failure of the European Union. The German socialist will succeed Jerzy Buzek after attracting the support of 387 MEPs in this morning’s ballot – while runners-up Nirj Deva and Diana Wallis won 142 and 141 votes respectively. Schulz’s triumph was anticipated well in advance thanks to the political deal made between the Socialists and Democrats and Buzek’s centre-right European People’s Party to share the presidency over the five-year parliament. Addressing MEP in Strasbourg after the vote Schulz – who has sat in the parliament since 1994 and led the S&D group for the last eight years, warned of a “crisis of confidence in politics and its institutions” that was “undermining faith in the European integration process”. He said: “More and more people are casting a suspicious eye on our work. They are not sure whether everything we do here is necessarily for the best. We must grasp the fact that people in Europe have little time for institutional debates because they are too busy worrying about their children’s future, their jobs, their pensions, about social justice.” (…) Schulz, a controversial figure for his combative style of debating, promised to be “the president of all of you, independent of your political or group affiliation” and said he took the office with “humility”. He added: “I intend to carry out the office of president of the European parliament in such a way that those who voted for me today can take pride in having done so, and those who did not vote for me today are pleasantly surprised.” Welcoming Schulz to the presidency, his counterpart at the European Commission José Manuel Barroso expressed his “warmest congratulations”. He said parliament had often seen Schulz’s “strong personality, his great political skills and his indefatigable efforts on behalf of you. He has an ambitious vision for those house, rightly, and he wants that voice to be heard better than it has in the past.”

Im neuen Amt will der bisherige Chef der sozialistischen Fraktion im Parlament “auf Augenhöhe” mitreden. Soll heißen: Konflikten mit der EU-Kommission wie auch den Staats- und Regierungschefs wird dieser Mann nicht aus dem Weg gehen. Lauwarm-diplomatische Begleitmusik zu einer maßgeblich von Deutschland und Frankreich bestimmten Politik ist seine Sache nicht. Das Europaparlament wird eine neue starke Stimme erhalten, die der Rolle des Hauses und seinem Mitbestimmungsanspruch nur gut tun kann.
