Exclusive: Pussy Riot, the feminist Russian punk band from which three members were found guilty of hooliganism driven by religious hatred and sentenced to two years in jail, have released a new single called Putin Lights Up the Fires. The big news today is that three members of Russian punk band Pussy Riot have each been sentenced to two years in jail under charges of “hooliganism”. Support for the band has been huge amongst Western media and musicians, as well as those within Russia, and the sentence is a huge blow for freedom of expression in the country (as well as for the women themselves, obviously – two of whom have children). Clearly though, as far as other members of the band are concerned, the fight isn’t over yet. Fresh from the sentences being announced, they’ve released a single, titled ‘Putin Lights Up The Fires’. The Guardian have put together a montage of Pussy Riot-related footage to accompany the song – including shots of the “punk prayer’ which first enraged the authorities – which you can watch below.
